Question and Answers

Q: “Hi, I’m a first year studying History of Art at York and wondered if you had any useful advice for the course. I’ve got an exam for Encounters with the Material Object in January – how did you prepare for this and manage your time in the first year and what would you do differently if you could go back? Thanks!” Q: “Hi there! I’ve just started studying HoA at York and wondered whether you could give me any advice about the first year, how to do well in exams and any techniques to improve my reading and note taking? Thanks” (These questions are very similar so I’ll answer them in one go!) My advice would be – try to be as open-minded as you can to all the different things you explore, whether that be particular theories (which I remember studying in first year), or particular time periods. By being open-minded, this allows you not only to appreciate different things that you might have somewhat ignored or not given much enthusiasm to; and also …

My week in photos

Sorry for the lack of posts the last week. This week has been incredibly hectic for me both work and leisure wise. I thought it might be cool to try and devote a post per week which basically details what I’ve been up to through my photos! The life of an art historian here at York does not only revolve around reading, but also venturing out of the confines of the library. This week I had a lot of reading, but whilst I wasn’t reading I’ve been playing tennis when the weather has been good, and this week I went to Leeds to see one of my favourite musicians play (Johnny Flynn – he’s great to listen and relax to. I find his soothing songs very good during revision!) This following week seems busy too, but I will endeavor to post some more! I’ve get some great posts coming to keep checking my blog out. Also, if you have any questions, I’m going to answer them this week so feel free to ask away! I …

Paris awaits

Three weeks today, myself and my fellow students on the ‘Death and Devotion’ module will be travelling to Paris for the week, and I cannot wait! I was lucky enough to go to Paris in the summer with my family, and going again with the department will be an incredibly enriching experience. We will be heading to Sainte-Chapelle, Notre Dame Cathedral, St Denis and venturing out to explore Chartres Cathedral. I have never been to St Denis or Chartres, so it will be great to experience some new, as well as familiar sites.

First day on campus!

It’s official. My third year has begun. We had our ‘Welcome Back’ briefing meeting today, which has mentally prepared me (and scared me a little) for what this year holds for me. This autumn term I have one module, Death and Devotion, and I shall begin to research for my dissertation. Basically, I’ll be doing a lot of reading this year, so nothing too new! It was great to see everyone back, and now the wheels are in motion and I should really begin to crack on with my work.  Good-bye summer, hello autumn!

End of summer, and back to York I go

I cannot believe how quickly the last three months have gone, and boy has this summer been extremely busy for me. When I wasn’t on holiday or exploring Europe, I luckily had various internships to give me a great insight into the world of art! In July I went to Paris for a few days with my family, immersing myself in all things historic and cultural that was on offer. This was my first time to Paris, and I had an amazing time. We explored all the major art galleries including the Louvre and theMusée d’Orsay. Highlights for myself was going into Notre-Dame Cathedral and Sainte-Chapelle. These are the most beautiful sacred spaces that I have been in, and the stained glass is just exquisite. I could have spent my whole time in each of these places! I am even more fortunate this up-coming term as part of a module that I am studying, Death and Devotion (a module I cannot wait to get started! – it is my ultimate course, all my favourite things for …

University: What to take!

My room at University! I just wanted to say a big well done for all those who are coming to the University of York to study History of Art! I’m so jealous of you all starting your very first year, and I can guarantee that you’ll have the most amazing time, both here in York and throughout your degree. I thought to ease the burden and the stress, and to lend a helping hand for all those about to embark on their new life here at York (and where ever else you are going if you’re reading this), I would comprise a list of all the things I think you need and should bring to uni. The horrible stress of A-Levels is now over and done, and you’ve left behind the constraining school environment. University is an amazing path to take in life, and I’m so thrilled that I’m there as well. So now you might be thinking, ‘What on earth should I take?!’ Well do not fear as I have composed a list of what I feel is …
